TREATING SCARS

Whether it be a scar through falling over, burning yourself on the oven or even through surgery, Skin Health Spa have the answer.

With 24 hour celebrity news being posted everywhere you look these days, suggesting un-realistic expectations and a desire for the 'perfect body'. Scars now may be viewed as ugly imperfections, which on certain parts of the body are hard to disguise. Also the psychological effects of a scar should also not be forgotten, the NHS do not offer treatments for scars, as they are seen as 'procedures of low clinical priority' and are not accesible unless you choose the private path. Therefore the availability of accesible, affordable and effective scar treatments through clinics is a valuable service.

Types of Scars

There are two types of scars that are usually mixed up; keloid and hypertrophic. The keloid is defined as an abnormal scar that extends out of the outline of the original site of injury, whereas the hypertrophic scar is a wide/un-sightly scar that does not extend from outside the original injury. Other scars include burns, post operative and trauma scars, post infective, diabetic wound scars or even combinations!

Scar treatments

Chemical peels- Peels for scar treatment are mainly used for acne scars, but can be used for any type of scar that fits the hypertrophy type (e.g burns, sugery or trauma); where our goal is to lower the scar to be flush with the skin. TCA and salicylic peels are most commonly used that destruct the tissue  and are usually combined with other treatments such as microneedling to give the best result. Here at Skin Health spa our aesthetic practioners can offer you a custom made package to get the right results for your skin.

Dermal fillers- Fillers are fantastic for pitted scars and 'ice pick' acne scars, by injecting the filler in the subcutaneous tissue using hylanoric acid (naturally found in the body) it will fill the defect from below and raise the surface to be consistent with the surrounding tissue reducing the visibilty of the scar and evening it out. Depending on the filler the lifespan is usually around 4-9 months. An added bonus is the collagen stimulatied from the process in a similar way to microneedling can lead to a more permanent filling by the client's own tissue. Here at Skin Health Spa we offer free conultations with all our nurses/doctors who can answer any questions you may have and have you feeling confident about the process!

Mirco needling- Micro needling also known as collagen induction therapy/ percutaneuous collagen induction involves making lots of small punctures into the scarred areas with needles which vary in depth for the scar and skin type. The device's are usually pen like (collagen pin) or needle roller heads (Dermarollers) but not to worry they are both used under topical numbing cream! By causing controlled trauma to the skin the skin rushes to heal itself through the bodys natural healing, producing collagen and elastin to reduce the appearence of the scar. This treatment can be used on most types of scars and find it works effectively in our clinics!.

Lasers- Lasers have been at the forefront of scar treatment since the start and have been shown to be effective many times. The older, more basic lasers rely on tissue destruction to get results, with scars that are raised using a selective breakage process of that area can greatly reduce the prominence of the scar helping to flatten it and making it more easier to cover and camouflage with makeup. The newer, fractional lasers treat only fractions of the skin at a time, splitting the laser target into thousands of  areas creating perforations into the scar, which then heal in a similar way to microneedling over a course of treatments. Pulsed dye lasers can use the wavelenght of the beam to target the pigmentation in the scar helping it pale back to skin colour. It is advised to use a combination of these lasers to give the most optimum result; destory the tissue first with the basic laser and then pulse laser to reduce pigment.

PRP- Platelet-rich plasma is made from paitents blood that has been centriuged to make it especially rich in platelet cells. First discoveed by Dr.Stanley Cohen and Dr. Rita Levi-Montaclini who were awarded a nobel peace prize for their work and since studies have been shown proving the effectiveness of PRPHow does it work?  A small amount of blood is taken in the exact way you would have a blood test. The test tube is then placed into a centrifuge and spun to separte the plasma the plasma and platelets form other blood components. After a few minutes the plasma and platelets are introduced and injected back into the clients desired site (scars) and can be used on any skin type or colour. What makes this treatment different is that it only contains the clients blood, with nothing else added. Meaning it is impossible for the client to be allergic to the treatment but also means its suitable for athelethes as it does intervene with the anti-doping regulations. With the platetlets containing many different substances including a wide range of growth factors (VEGF, PDGFBFGF) it creates stimulation of growth of tissues and blood cells, using your body's natural defense system to heal the scars.

There you have it some of the possible treatments we can offer you for any scarring concerns. If your still unsure what is best for you then please don't hesitate to book in for a free skin consultation with one of highly trained professional aestheticians who will answer any questions you have and make you feel at ease. Look forward to welcoming you into our Clinic's.

Love your Skin Health Angels.
