Skincare Through The Years

13/07/2016

As we age our skin changes a lot, meaning what worked for you in your twenties may not work when you're in your fifties. When it comes to skin care, many never change our routine, using the same cleanser and moisturiser from our teens. For glowing skin and natural beauty at every age, it's time to rethink your skin routine. Here's our decade-by-decade product and treatment guide to great skin.

If you are 20 Something...

Skincare in your twenties is mostly about putting the building blocks in place: Protection + Prevention. Everything from unexpected adult breakouts / blemishes to the early signs of ageing skin can happen in your twenties. The hormone surges and dreaded breakouts of your teen years will have leveled off, but it's time to build up the proper discipline and habits that will help you age with radiance.

The solution:

Flint + Fint Everyday Wash - Our skin is usually richer in oils in our 20's so the skin needs a deep clean everyday to remove build up of dirt and grime. The daily wash contains a 2% glycolic acid for everyday exfoliation and Moringa Oil it really lifts dirt to leave super clean skin.

Flint + Flint Moisturiser - This moisturiser will protect skin from harmful free-radicals that cause damage to the skin which only shows as you get older! it will also help to keep skin hydrated and plump.

Flint + Flint SPF 30 Primer - Everyone should wear a sun protection factor every day, no matter what their age. Introducing an SPF in your 20's and using it everyday will help prevent photo-ageing and sun damage that can rear its ugly head as you get older - trust us you'll thank you twenty year old self when your 40.

Microdermabrasion - Starting with in-clinic skin treatments in your 20's is key to preventing premature ageing. Collagen and elastin production gradually starts to slow so this deep exfoliating facial will stimulate your skin, keep your complexion looking fresh and removal of dead skin cells will keep it bright.

Flint + Flint Express Facial - It's beneficially to get your skin into a good routine in your 20's and this facial will hydrate and protect your skin whilst providing a good exfoliation.

If you are 30 Something...

It's sad but true; skin aging really begins at 30 (especially if you've exposed yourself to the sun a fair bit in your 20's). Fine lines will develop as Collagen and Elastin start to break down, and delicate under-eyes skin begins to thin. Thread or broken veins may start to show up as small red lines/spots, and in your late thirties age spots and brown pigmentation marks, or 'sun spots', may appear. Under-eye puffiness may become a problem, taking longer to subside after you wake.

The solution:

Flint + Flint Glycolic Cleanser - Introducing this 12% Glycolic Acid cleanser daily in your 30's will provide a deeper exfoliation and keep skin looking fresh.

Flint + Flint Serum - This wonder product combats free-radicals and is packed full of antioxidants, which skin needs in your 30's as signs of ageing begin to surface.

Flint + Flint Eye hero - Under-eye puffiness may become a problem, taking longer to subside after you wake. Prevent wrinkles and reduce dark circles by using this eye cream every night. t

Crystal Clear Comcit - An advanced in-clinic skin treatment Comcit™ helps combat and prevent the visible signs of aging that may appear in your 30s by stimulating collagen and elastin, helping the skin to appear more taught and lifted whilst improving the overall texture.

Glycolic peels - Simple, safe and effective, Glycolic peels will help prevent visible signs of ageing and when done regularly will promote brighter skin by providing a deep exfoliation. Don't worry you won't come out looking like Samantha in Sex and The City when she 'had a little something done', Glycolic Acid is devired from natural sugar cane, is a superficial and needs no 'down-time' post treatment.

If you are 40 Something...

Most people's skin becomes noticeably drier in their forties, and in some womens cases (in the run-up to and during the menopause), skin may also become more sensitive. Deeper lines may have begun around the mouth and eyes, folds may appear on the forehead and circles under the eyes may grow into pouches. In your forties your skin loses its resilience due to a breakdown of Elastin and Collagen.

The solution:

Flint + Flint Moisturiser x3- As well as sticking with your Glycolic cleanser, Eye Hero and SPF from your 20's and 30's you will need to introduce some more specific products into your rountine to combat ageing. This rich night cream should be introduced to repair those sluggish skin cells whilst you sleep and keep skin hydrated.

Flint + Flint Enzyme 3 Mask - A mask will give the skin an extra boost and brighten. This at home treatment mask helps as the skin starts to dry out from dead skin cells that need removing regularly.

Collagen PIN™ - This automated micro-needling system pores springs into action to tackle pores that will be less refined and combat wrinkles that may have become more noticeable. Collagen PIN™ will tighten the skin and improve the texture whilst stimulating the collagen and elastin that lacks more in your 40's.

Emerge™ Fractional Laser - perfect for reducing age spots, sun damage and tightening the skin (both Emerge and Collagen PIN could be introduced for optimum results)

Botox - You may want to consider Botox in your 40's to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and also as a preventative method to stop them getting worse and becoming 'static lines' in your fifties.

If you are 50 Something...

The lines you develop in your 50's may deepen into folds. This is because, post-menopausal, there's much less estrogen being produced and without estrogen, skin becomes thinner and more fragile. It also can't retain moisture as easily and the production of collagen and elastin slows down significantly. Skin tone is also likely to become more uneven, with an increasing number of 'sun spots', 'age spots' or pigmentation.

The solution:

Flint + Flint SPF Hand Hero - Hands will start to age and need daily protection now to prevent further damage so throw this great little hand cream into the mix.

Flint + Flint Glycolic Cleanser - If you hadn't already started using a glycolic wash in your 30's you should definitely be using one in your 50's. Used daily it will help slow the aging process and remove dead skin. It's important in your 50's to cleanse with proper cleansers that won't strip skin of moisture, and to exfoliate on a weekly basis. Most importantly, you'll need to keep skin moisturized throughout the day and use a good anti-ageing serum.

Dermal Fillers - Hyalouronic Acis Fillers may be considered at this stage as lines become more prominent and to give the skin more structure.

TCA peel - Any sun damage that was present in your 30's/40's will now have made itself to the surface and the skin can appear uneven. A TCA peel will give the skin a deep peel whilst treating various different ageing concerns.

If you are 60 Something...

If you've followed a good skincare routine through your younger years then your skin should be in great condition in your sixties but there may still some areas of concerns that are going to need a little helping hand as gravity kicks in.

The solutions:

Skincare - use all the great products you have been over the years, noting if you need to up the anti with hydration (switch to a heavier moisturiser) and treat your skin to an exfoliation and mask 3 times per week.

Laser - Pigmented lesions (darker brown patches) or broken veins may now be present so we'd recommend a targeted cynosure laser treatment to work deeper into the skin to lift dark patches or broken veins and even skin tone. Cynosure Laser effectively removes these targeted areas where peels may no longer be strong enough to tackle.

Specialist injectables - Loss of facial volume is a big contributor to ageing skin and results in sagging skin under the eyes, below the cheeks and around the jawline leaving a jowls. To really enhance the face and replace much needed volume we have a number of specialist injectable treatment including the 8-point-lift - a non surgical face lift using Dermal FIllers. Using fillers in 8 strategic places around the face will lift and contour without having to go under the knife and this bespoke treatment is pioneers non-invasive solutions with great long-lasting results.
