Survey Shows Brits Are Failing To Protect Skin From Cancer

29/07/2015

We stumbled upon a recent survey by The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) revealing a worrying attitude towards the UK's most common form of cancer. The survey released for Sun Awareness Week last month showed that 72% of people had been sunburnt at some point during the last year. Sunburn can more than double the risk of developing Melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Other stats from the survey, which received answers from 1,018 people include:

  • 96% of Brits fail to check their skin once a month for skin cancer.
  • 84% of are worried about skin cancer in the UK climate.
  • 88% don't think skin cancer is any easier to remove than other cancers.
  • 95% know that skin cancer rates in the UK are still rising.
  • 77% do not feel confident that they could recognise signs of melanoma.

Skin cancer results in around 2,148 deaths every year and over 13,000 new cases of melanoma skin cancer are diagnosed annually. The survey is a reflection of poor sun protection habits - people underestimate the damage that sunburn can do their skin with many people thinking that reddening is just a harmless part of the tanning process. The truth is that sunburn is a sure sign that your skin has been damaged irreparably.

Rising skin cancer rates are a major health concern for the UK, and some dermatology departments are stretched to capacity trying to keep up with cases. Whilst many of us in the UK are aware of the dangers, we are yet adopt the sun protection and skin checking culture which would help to prevent cases.
