Whats Fact and Whats Fiction When It Comes To Botox

THE TRUTH ABOUT BOTOX

Despite what you may read in the media Botox or Botulinum Toxin is not all frozen faces. We dispel the common myths and give you some hard facts on this quick, painless and effective treatment.

Fact No.1 - BOTOX IS A BRAND NAME; IT IS A NEUROTOXIN.

The molecules attach to the nerve endings in your muscles to block the impulse from the nerves that make the muscle contract. When muscles move, they pull on the skin causing lines to appear.  The most common places to have Botox injected are the frown lines, forehead and crows feet around the eyes. We can also administer it to the lower face to soften lines too.

Fact No.2 - IT IS DIFFERENT TO DERMAL FILLERS.

Unlike Botox, fillers are a gel not a toxin. They are injected under the skin and not into the muscle. The most common filler is hyaluronic acid (which is naturally occurring in the body), a temporary filler it replaces lost volume. You can fillers in places that lose volume with age, such as lips and cheeks. They both address lines, just in different ways.

Fact No.3 - LESS IS MORE.

You don’t want to freeze your face! Muscle atrophy (where it wastes away) can occur when Botox is overdone, A little movement is much better, and a more modern approach.

Fact No.5 - YOU DON'T NEED TO SLEEP SITTING UPRIGHT!

There is a myth that the night after getting Botox you should sleep upright, that's just not true. You need to stay upright for about 6 hours after treatment, so essentially just no lying down and avoid bending over until 6 hours has passed. You can go about your normal day and night routine. You may experience a slight headache while the Botox is getting to work but that's it.

Fact No.6 - IT TAKES 7-10 DAYS TO SEE RESULTS.

Sure, it's quicker and more effective than a cream but it doens't work instantly. You'll notice a softening and restriction of movement after 3-4 days, with the full effect becoming noticeable between days 7 and 10.

Fact No.7 - IT IS NOT GOING TO MAKE YOU EVEN OLDER IF YOU STOP.

People often worry that if you have one treatment and then stop you may look older than you did before the treatment but it is not the case. Botox simply pauses the ageing process in the treated area (worth noting: it will not fix the skins condition, just prevent lines and wrinkles), once you stop having treatment you will just continue to age naturally as you would have done before botox.

Fact No.8 - YOUR SKIN IMPROVES.

The restricted movement of the skin gives it a chance to rest and regenerate itself - to an extent – this doesn’t mean you can relax with your cleansing and skincare routine.

TRUTH No.9 - BOTOX DOESN'T WORK ON EVERYONE.

They actually develop antibodies to it, these destroy the Botox so it doesn’t work. I’ve only had two or three patients in the past seven years where it has simply not worked, so it can happen. As for allergic reactions? I’ve personally not seen one.

TRUTH No.10 - YOU NEED TO KEEP GOING BACK.

Botox wears off; usually people come every three to six months, on average, for top-ups. Some people leave it longer, others leave it less – it’s personal preference and the person treating you can advise on this.

TRUTH No.11 - IT CAN STOP SWEATING.

It can be injected into the palms, armpits – basically small areas where you may sweat.  And, for the record, it’s a total myth when people say “you sweat more from other places as a result”. The Botox blocks the nerve endings to the sweat glands so they just don’t produce sweat.
