'First things first- Laser Hair Removal is the sh**t
Imagine never having to wax, shave or epilate again… it is definitely something all you girls and boys, need to know/be educated about and hopefully, I can help!
I would definitely recommend this to anyone- with up to 95% permanent reduction in unwanted hair, saving hours of shaving, dreaded shaving rash as well as those nasty cuts, great for ingrown hairs and a long lasting solution!
I also love that this is a treatment is mostly available to everyone. Yes, it is great for us girls who can’t be bothered with our legs but it’s also great for any girls with polycystic ovaries, or anyone transitioning to transgender or simply any gym buffs out there who want to be smooth for their shows!
Not only is it great physically on the outside, but can also help confidence mentally
WHERE DO I START?
Always make sure to research different clinics, look at reviews, talk to others you know who have had the treatment done (if you do) as I personally believe word of mouth is always the best referral and most importantly BOOK A CONSULTATION. As this gives you the best feel of the clinic, the staff, the machine, the laser technicians knowledge and you get to ask any questions you like before you decide if you want to take the plunge!
Of course, I went to my trusty local Skin Health Spa where I have been going for years, as I feel very comfortable around all the girls and they have always provided me with 5-star service. After being greeted through reception and into the waiting room, I was given a medical history form to fill in with various questions about my personal health as this helps give the Aesthetician/ Laser technician a rough idea if I am suitable for the treatment and what she can and cannot do with me for safety and to have on her records for future. I am then called through into the laser room and asked to take a seat. My Aesthetician sits with me and introduces herself, her qualifications/experience in Laser hair removal and then also gives me a brief overview of Skin Health Spa ethos before running through my medical history form to make sure it is all correct and in order. Now it’s time to be introduced to the laser…
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Skin Health Spa uses a Cynosure Elite+™ Laser machine which is one of the original brands/innovators of Laser and one of the best for Laser hair removal on the market. It has adjustable wavelengths using both Alexandrite and ND-Yag for all you Aestheticians out there, making it safe to use for all skin types as well as being able to target lighter hair colours. That being said if you have white or grey hair this is a no-no as the laser is attracted to the pigment in your hair, so if there is no colour it can’t attack it!
Essentially the lasers light energy ZAP converts into heat which passes through the skin and is absorbed by the hairs dark pigment in the hair follicle. This cuts the supply of blood going to the hair follicle and destroys the root without damaging the surrounding cells, inhibiting growth. So, each and every time you come in for treatment you will weaken the follicle, you will notice this more and more as your treatments go on as your hair will become a lot lighter and softer- More of a peach then a wiry Hagrid… Then eventually you will be smooth as a baby’s bum!
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
Your Laser technician will run through a few do’s and don’ts for laser, these are VERY important so make sure you remember.
• DO SHAVE- Do not wax, pluck or epilate! You need the hair to be in the root for it to be attacked with the laser – if it’s not there it is just a wasted treatment! Try and shave the day before or on the day of treatment.
• NO REAL OR FAKE TAN- This is a biggy, as having a tan changes the pigment in your skin, so your laser settings will not be correct and can result in a laser burn ouch- which can scar, blister, scab and all that nasty stuff! So it’s definitely better to be safe than sorry- but obviously, if you are having your underarms done it is fine to have tan on your legs, and if you do have a tan you just have to wait 6 weeks for it to fade, then your good to go again!
• NO PERFUME, CREAMS OR DEODORANT – Avoid all these on the day of your treatment, you don’t want anything to irritate your skin. The only thing you should apply after is Aloe Vera gel to soothe the area, you should also wear an SPF30 every day on the area you have treated if exposed to the sun- especially the face!
HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO I NEED?
On average it takes 6-8 treatments but this all depends on the individual! If you are having facial treatments it is recommended to have a treatment every 4 weeks, but for the body it is every 6 weeks. It is also important to remember there is no guarantee for the hair to be 100% gone- but there is up to a 95% permanent reduction in unwanted hair.
DOES IT HURT?
During your consultation after going through verbal communications and your questions, your laser technician will perform a patch test to find the most suitable settings for your skin/hair type and will tell you there and then if Laser hair removal is for you. But no need to fear it will only be a couple of quick zaps, it essentially feels like being flicked by an elastic band also you do have a cooler blowing on you which definitely takes the sting away. It is definitely bearable and oh so worth it, but it all depends on your pain threshold. *You also get given some funky goggles to wear. Once you know the feeling, you get used to it. I now scroll through my phone or read a magazine through treatments and I almost forget I’m having a laser treatment!
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?
Immediately after treatment, your treated area may feel quite warm, look pink/red and be a little swollen but your Aesthetician will always apply Aloe Vera Gel and SPF before you leave and generally only lasts a few hours. But for the next 24 hours you should avoid any sun exposure, sauna, hot showers/bath, the gym as if we need an excuse to get out of that one. So just take it easy and your laser technician will run through any other aftercare!
