Skin pigmentation can be described as discoloured marks or brown spots, as well as darker patches of skin. Pigmentation is one of the top skin concerns in the UK. If you ask most people what they would most like to improve about their skin, the answer usually involve improving skin tone or removing flaws and imperfections. When skin has a clear and even tone it portrays an image of health.

The most common forms of pigmentation in men and women is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which is caused by damage to the skin and Melasma, which is often triggered hormonally (i.e. during pregnancy).

Hyperpigmentation is the excess production of the skin pigment melanin, this is what gives hair, skin and eye colour. When production is triggered it can show itself as localised patches, which are darker than the surrounding skin. The patches are typically non-raised, as the hyperpigmentation occurs beneath the top layer of skin.

There are many reasons for the occurrence of skin pigmentation including hormonal changes, exposure to the sun without protection, genetics and injury.

Melasma is a very common hormonal pigmentation, mostly found in women. It can be attributed to hormonal changes such as pregnancy.

Sun damage is a result of prolonged exposure to the sun with little to no protection from damaging UVA and UVB infrared rays.

Pigmentation can occur due to inherited skin tone or from a genetic disorder.

Marks left from Injury or trauma to the skin is known as Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH). It’s caused by an injury or inflammation of the skin, which when exposed to sunlight leaves marks. Acne is often the cause of PIH.

Pigmentation can take many forms including:

Age Spots (Lentigo)

Sun Spots or Brown Spots

Larger patches like Melasma (pregnancy mask)

Pigmentation and sun damage can be reversed and is not something that has to be accepted as permanent. Skin Health Spa offers a number of treatments that can help to lighten pigmentation, please see below:
