Preparing Your Skin For Autumn

As we're left wondering where the year is going, the months fly by and our skin is met by a whole host of new demands. How’s best to meet these new demands of our skin come Autumn and Winter? We are sometimes in danger of causing more damage than good and getting very confused and overwhelmed with the products on offer.

Layer Up!

Layer serums and moisturisers to create a protective barrier for your skin and guard it from the elements. In the summer we tend to focus on mattifying lotions to reduce shine and spf's that include a tint for perfect beach skin but as we head into Autumn and Winter we should swap these products for richer more textured creams that provide deep moisture and build a barrier against harsh winds and rain.

We love adjusting our wardrobe to suit the autumn months, lots of chunky knits and scarves, and its so important to remember its not just your wardrobe you need to adjust for the season change, you should also adjust your skincare routine. It's all about building barriers to protect your skin to layer up your products.

We recommend trying the following combination of products and treatments to keep your skin looking glowing and tip top this Autumn.

1. Glycolic Cleanser: Choose a good Glycolic cleanser that includes at least 12% Glycolic Acid. Used daily this cleanser will help to remove dead skin cells, aid dry and damaged cells to reveal fresher, more radiant skin. We recommend Flint + Flint Glycolic Cleanser (£30 for 100ml) or Dermaquest Peptide Glyco Cleanser (£29 for 6oz).

2. Nourishing Serum: Once all the dead skin cells have been gently removed its time to load up your skin with a nourishing serum. Serums have become very popular over the past few years, and for good reason. They have the amazing ability to deliver active ingredients and nutrients deeper into the lower dermis of skin, precisely where its needed as opposed to more traditional creams and lotions that often sit on the epi-dermis (outer layers). Pick a serum thats packed with Vitamin C & multi-minerals. Its also important to make sure they have high concentrations or purified active ingredients and not watered down. We would suggest you try Agera MagC® Peptide Serum (£43 for 1oz) or Flint + Flint Serum (£48 for 50ml !!)

3. Protecting Moisturiser: Now our skin has been fed by a nourishing serum we need to create a protective barrier against free readicals and harsh autumn/winter elements. Pick a moisturiser that is rich in skin-protecting polysaccharides and lipids and try to get one that also combines antioxidants to protect the skin from environmental damage, just because the sun may not be shining everyday in it doesn't mean our skin isn't at risk from UV, UVA/UVB damage. To protect and shield your skin this Autumn we would recommend either Flint + Flint Moisturiser (£32 for 50ml) or Agera Daily Moisturising Protector SPF 25 (£27 for 2oz)

4. Microdermabrasion and Transderm Treatments: Alternating these fantastic in clinic treatments throughout the Autumn and Winter months can make a world of difference to the condition of your skin. A microdermabrasion treats the skin to a deep, mechanical exfoliation, which gently resurfaces the outer layers of the skin, removing damaged cells and stimulating the skin's natural cell regenerating process. The result is healthy, natural, smooth and youthful skin. Using a vacuum, the machine and a specially designed hand piece pass micro-fine crystals across the skin. As the crystals make contact, layers of the stratum corneum are exfoliated, then vacuumed away with the dead skin cells. The process rejuvenates the skin in a number of ways. We then recommend that you follow up with a Transderm treatment, a proven mechanical facial system and a hand held device that uses electrical pulses to aid and improve trans-dermal or deep epidermis delivery of cosmeceutical products resulting in very hydrated, healthy skin. Both Microdermabrasion and Transderm treatments are available at all Skin Health Spa treatments.
