What is Pigmentation?
Do you have discoloured marks or brown spots, as well as darker patches of skin? This is known as pigmentation, is one of the top skin concerns in the UK. If you ask most people what they would most like to improve about their skin, the answer usually involves improving skin tone or removing flaws and imperfections.
An uneven skin tone alone can account for up to 20 years of age perception, what really makes us look older is uneven skin.
What causes pigmentation?
Melanocytes in our skin cells produce melanin (pigment). When skin cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects the melanocytes and causes excess melanin production (pigmented patches).
Lots of factors can trigger pigmentation but common causes include Sun exposure, Ageing Skin, Tissue Inflammation, Hormonal Changes, Photosensitising Medication, Chemical Agents and Genetic Predisposition.
Treatment varies depending on the type of pigmentation and the individual’s skin. There are several options and one of our most popular is a combination of skin peels and home-use products. A chemical peel removes several layers of sun damaged skin cells, revealing a fresher skin with a more even surface colour. The peel also stimulates the formation of new collagen, which helps improve skin texture as well.
